bye bye

This cereal from Trader Joe's... simply amazing.

However, I'm sad to say that I can't eat it anymore... due to possible allergic reactions.
I might be becoming allergic to something.. either nuts or oats... something in cereal.

I'm afraid it's a bye bye to all cereals.

Nevertheless, the cereal itself is molto delicious.

It only costs about $3.5 compared to
$5~$6 unhealthy cereals.

Cereal in nyc is a luxury, just like cigarettes.

attention to detail

I've switched to Ben & Jerry's Pistachio ice cream because it has full roasted pistachios.
However, I recently purchased Haagen Dazs Pistachio ice cream because it's currently on sale at Whole Foods: 2 for $6

I noticed that there are more chunks of pistachio than before!!
Good move Haagen.

...but I still prefer Ben & Jerry's Pistachio :)

The Donut Pub

Everytime I walk towards chelsea/meatpacking district,
I pass by The Donut Pub.
What a great name.

Delicious donuts at the right price: $3 for the above.
You can barely get a cupcake with 3 dollars in the city...

I love the vintage/retro/old school feel of this place. It's like I traveled back in time... I should dress accordingly next time.

America shouldn't run on Dunkin

*14th street (and 7th ave)

hunger + pizza = $1

2Bros Pizza has several locations around the city.
I usually go to the one on St. Marks (and 2nd ave).

1 slice: $1

2 slices + soda:
$2.75

Can't beat that... Although, Ray's pizza on Houston and Ludlow had 45 cents Pizza for their anniversary last week.
But it was only for one day.

Whole Foods

So... I've been avoiding Whole Foods for quite a while because of their ridiculous prices.

Until one day... I gave it a second chance. It's only 3 blocks from my apartment, so why not.

Not so bad after all. You really have to keep an eye out for decent prices at Whole Foods, but it's not impossible.

Here is a list of things I would buy here from now on:

White Bread: $3.29

Jam: $2.29

Cheddar Cheese Slices: $2.99

Cream Cheese: $1.99

Soy Milk: $1.69

Roasted Turkey: $3.69

This is not bad for New York...

+Plus, every now and then they have ice cream sales. Last time I got a pint of Ben & Jerry's for $3

Sophie's.

I'm going to start with one of my favorite places to get lunch. Sophie's.
Amazing food, generous portions, reasonable prices.
They have everyday meals and special meals depending on the day of the week. All meals come with two sides of your choice.

My favorite: Tuesdays and Thursdays/Beef Stew (Carne con Papas) with sweet plantains and yellow rice.

All meals cost: $8 except when they have Ox Tail: $10

When I don't get full meals, I usually get soup.
Mon/Wed/Fri = Chicken Soup
Tues/Thurs = Beef Soup
Both equally good, cost only $3.50

Sophie's also has one of the best empanadas I've tried in the states.
Only $1.50 [They used to have a special that cost $1 each... not anymore]

Finally, I want to end this post with my everyday craving... Papas Rellenas: $1.50
JUST TRY IT!

p.s. Try their spicy green sauce

what the what?

This is a blog about cheap eats around New York City. Be it, restaurants, vendors, groceries, cafes, etc.
If you can eat it, I'll write it.

Occasionally, I'll put up Not-so-Budgeat posts about good food I would eat if I won the lottery.
